Business Systems at the Maryland Film Festival

Supporting the evolution of a storied non-profit on the precipice of change

MdFF has been running fantastic festivals and programming for over 10 years. In April 2017 they were set to begin operations of their first 365-day-a-year film center. The SNF Parkway is the restored version of a beautiful "film palace" originally built in the 1920s. With the acquisition and coming operation of the Parkway, MdFF was undergoing a seismic change in the scale of its operations. Working with alongside a design student and under the immediate direction of Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels, I conducted strategic planning and analysis of opportunities to help MdFF succeed with its operation of the SNF Parkway Film Center. Our work focused on incorporating business structures and identifying important financial / operational guide-posts as they scale up their organization.

Building a Stronger Jonestown

Building a Business Association in Developing Neighborhoods

As part of a team of MBA's, I helped the Baltimore neighborhoods of Jonestown and Oldtown work toward inclusive community development by helping them build a strong business network. Jonestown is a unique community with great history and immense potential for growth. It is also on the cusp of major real estate development and growth as Baltimore grows. In order to help them develop in a way that allows residents to benefit from that growth, we worked with local business to establish a formal business association and provided tools for them to operate it effectively.

Community Development in Urban Hyderabad

Work with the South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies (SaciWATERs)

Urban slums in Hyderabad, India face immense challenges with limited water resources. SaciWATERs works with urban communities to educate and promote civic engagement among the residents so they can fight for better water resources. Leading a team of MBA students, I worked to develop business models to sustain a network of citizen-led advocacy groups. Our team consulted on operational and financial options for supporting the community action groups. We delivered recommendations and implementation plans on practical improvements.

Promoting Coding Skills in Baltimore City Schools

HackCarey Code Workshop

Working in partnership with MindGrub and Baltimore City School systems, I am leading 2016's iteration of the HackCarey code workshop. The third annual HackCarey, hosted by Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, is a full day coding event for Baltimore City school students. During the event, students develop a web-game using  HTML5 and Javascript, and share their projects via social media. It's a joy to facilitate this event to promote programming skills among Baltimore's talented high school students.

Analysis of Campus Crime Statistics

Employing Statistical Models to Analyze Patterns of University Crime

I used regression modeling and hierarchical cluster analysis in R to assess trends with university crime. Pulling from D.O.Ed. data sets, I looked at the prevalence of various types of crime (drug, weapon, theft, assault, hate, etc.) and used analytical methods to identify "hotspots" of crime and clusters of universities with shared characteristics. Conclusions from this project showed that gender ratios and school type are statistically correlated with arrest numbers, and that on-campus crime levels are fairly even across all states. This type of analysis enables a comparison of universities based upon similar crime environments, which could foster better sharing of best practices and crime response strategies.

Network Analysis of International Embassies

Looking at Changes in Embassy Connections with Network Theory

Can embassy placements tell us anything about the international political network? Do attributes of countries predict a political affiliation between two different nations? Using quantitative assessments and logarithmic regression models, I explored how various attributes (i.e. language, development status, region, population, etc.) correlate to political association between nations. Plotting these networks, I also examined whether distinct clusters existed, and how central and connected various nations were in the overall network.
